Hints from Helouise: a .357 revolver can fire .38 rounds. .38 cal ammo is typically less powerful (and weirdly, more expensive) than 9mm.

You might be able to stick full-house 357s into a pistol chambered for .38, but you’d do so only at your extreme peril.
