You can give a really big powerful gun of almost any type to a sports shooter and not have a problem. People do hunt with AR/SKS/AK type rifles. There are service rifle competitions designed around military issued models.

You can give a tiny little .22 caliber revolver of simple manufacture to a killer and lose a leading Presidential candidate. Every person in the room with Bobby Kennedy that got hit went down.

As long as we focus only on the guns we will see little or no change in day to day violence. Focusing on the guns serves the propagandists of both sides.
