As I saw mentioned elsewhere here today, it really only matters if the protesters are 100% pure in their non-violence and the bad guys beat them up anyway. March 7, 1965 for example.

Well, nobody is 100% pure anything, though I’m still not clear on where OWS have been violent. Every movement has its flaws and f’ed up people.

One of the critiques of SCLC in Selma was that they just stormed through, then left. Anyone who has been to Selma recently can see what they mean…parts of the poorest parts of town — no need to state the demographics of that part of town — the boards on the boarded up buildings are rotting off, that’s how neglected parts of Lowndes County still are.

But then, this is why I disagree with OWS comparing themselves to “Arab Srping”. We’ve had one of those…lasted about a decade, not just a spring. I really don’t think people are trained for something like what Civil Rights or AIDS activism dealt with. Hope I’m wrong; hope we don’t ever have to find out.
