It is. But my father says that on rare occasions too (though my dad’s use of the term has declined sharply in the last few years), and neither he nor Nordlinger is any supporter of segregation. Freetoken was saying that there were NR writers who agree with Derbyshire’s support of segregation, and I do not believe that is true. Whether any NR writers may have racist thought is another matter. I only intended to address the stated contention.

If you’re only talking about segregation, then I suppose NRO is now free of that type of writer. But Nordlinger and Conrad Black are still employed there, so the blatant racism of other sorts lives on.

NRO’s legacy on segregation isn’t exactly pristine. Everyone seems to give Buckley’s segregationism a pass, either because of the times or just out of deference to his overall intelligence.

Let’s face the simple truth of the last 40 years: it’s no accident that the GOP is still 95% white in a country that is only 60% white.
