That’s probably where he got the idea. Read the sentencing and said, why not me?
Chuck thinks he found the magic loophole in extortion law. That Bollaert’s mistake was funneling the payment through a racket called “protectmyreputation.com” where the subject of the information what the person explicitly being shaken down for payment. In Chuck’s mind if he builds some level of plausible deniability, by ostensibly putting “exclusive” possession of the information itself up for sale to any interested party. That way if the only person truly interested in suppressing it, i.e. the victim, buys it then it’s magically not extortion, because reasons.
It’s no wonder Chuck has raised serious alarm bells with past donors. What he wants to build is a web enabled blackmail engine.
