The Burkett mentioned is the man who wrote Stolen Valor exposing fake vets, primarily fake Vietnam vets, but also others.

Check out this site, Australian and New Zealand Military Imposters (ANZMI), for the equivalent phenomenon there, it’s a problem not confined to the USA. The Brits have a term for them, “Walts”, as in the Walter Mitty character.
