While I’m not convinced by Carrier, I don’t see the distinction as non-existent. The distinction is between Jesus made out of whole cloth, on the basis of Hebrew prophecies; and Jesus a real figure, although heavily mythologized. If there is historical evidence for Jesus’ existence, then the former is just false. Is it possible to prove the former if there is no such evidence? I don’t know, but that’s what Carrier will try to do in his next book, offering the refinement of the “sublunar incarnation” theory. So, it may be hard but possible. Or maybe impossible.
