It’s a bit more than that IMO. It makes people afraid of each other and less trusting. That erodes whole communities. I know this, I’ve watched it happen in my own community. In 15 yrs, this place has changed, A LOT. People used to do stuff like potluck suppers at the library. The practice was stopped because of concerns of some horrible person(aka someone”new”) would bring poisoned food. I tried to bring the practice back and was told that it’s not allowed anymore in public buildings. Because people are scared shitless of one another, and the news and other factors are directly responsible for that. So who profits from that fear? Gun makers and dealers, megachurches (it’s not a coincidence that three of them have been built within 5 miles of my house in the last decade, along with a HUGE Christian K-12 school that costs 25K a yr to send a kid to), home security companies, etc.

We’ve become isolated from one another to an unhealthy degree. If we ever got over that and joined together over the REAL dangers to ourselves and families, the powerful would shit themselves in fear daily. They are not scared of us, we’re too scared of each other to be a threat to them.
