I have no problem with Prisons being a hard and difficult place. Start everybody with minimal privileges and comforts, and as they earn point by taking steps to rehabilitate or at least behave in a model manner, reward them with more and more rights and small independence’s inside the system.

That being said, when the State takes the responsibility of taking away a persons freedom, they (the State) takes on a special responsibility to ensure the basic living conditions and rights that we associate with living in a civil society. Freedom from rape is sure as hell one of those.
