There were no large international corporations back then, the very concept of the multinational was alien to them.
And the notion of granting them legal personhood would have been abhorrent.
They had some idea, with the East India Trading Company being one of the reasons why the Revolution began in the first place. So to hear that such companies, who used their power and influence to press governments into levying oppressive taxes on the locals, now are being worshiped by one half of the very government they were creating, would be shocking.
