When I was 34, I quit my job as a high school English teacher to take a job doing technical training for a software company (My annual salary skyrocketed 13 years up the teacher salary scale from 28K to 45K). It was scary, because I wasn’t sure I was technical enough to learn the material and then be able to teach it. And this was just an entry level training position, sure, but I was a teacher so it seemed like a good foot through the door. Over the next few years, I learned a bit about how to test software (from my students, who had real world problems they needed solving, and not sample program exercises), and got good at using the tools. At 36, my company sent me to the UK to set up their training department and to train some partner resellers in Germany. Two years later I came back to the states and began working for former customers as a testing engineer. Today (14 years later), I’m a QA Director for a start up. Just took this job three weeks ago and I’m nervous as hell as it’s in an industry (online marketing) about which I know very little. But hey, life’s an adventure, right?

So don’t give me that “I’m too old at 34 to change” shit. This is motherfuckin’ America. Anything is possible. And one of these days I’m going to be rich enough to go back to teaching high school English…because I fucking love that shit.

Old man yells at intertoobz.
