I think it’s advantage is the usual sort - for breeding.

Religion supplies an alternate ladder for social prestige, something that drives many people.

You can be an idiot, you can have no skills or abilities, you can be a convict… but if you profess the right beliefs you can borrow prestige among a society of believers - something you could never get otherwise.
