But it is true that the people that first settled here were actually too conservative/reactionary for the state doctrine of the day. Such an exceptionalist streak continues to run deep.

I know, I have a hard time reconciling the Puritans with the Separation of Church & State. But I guess those founders were talking from the new experience…
