In theory, it’s not a bad idea to ask for ID in order to vote — in theory.

In practice, you end up disenfranchising millions of voters who for some reason or another are not able to get IDs. Like one lady who had been voting for 48 years and suddenly finds herself ineligible to vote because she needs a birth certificate that she never had and it would cost her an insurmountable $200 to get one. In practice, it ends up being a poll tax which was long ago found illegal. And the people you end up disenfranchising just happen to largely vote for Democrats, which explains why Republicans are so interested in doing it. If Republicans have to disenfranchise millions of voters in order to get elected, that means their ideas suck.
