And to follow up: I’m guessing this is just another example of Trump’s “thinking” (if that term even applies) being stuck somewhere in the 1970s: when the “car industry” was firmly divided between “American cars” (i.e. huge domestically-built Detroit Iron) and “foreign cars” - either luxury specialties (Mercedes, Jaguar), hippy-dippy jokes (VW Beetle), or tinpot “rice-burners” - from a era in which “Made in Japan” still had a residually negative connotation.

I’ve always thought his world view was 70s with some of the 40s, 50s, and 60s added in probably due to his father.

He also has picked up on the biggest issues since then and added them to the old thinking.

You end up with a mind very stuck in some ideal that never was or will be but damn it, he thinks it is so.
