Most of what you liked weren’t found on commercial radio stations, but were pretty big on college radio. They also found a good deal of airtime on MTV before the major label acts monopolized (and eventually killed) the music video genre.

Some of it was, but only some. The somewhat older kids running the local college radio had their own tastes and prejudices too. The really hated it when on our shows we’d go from REM to Rush to XTC to The Clash to Led Zeppelin or Triumph. LOL
