I must confess, back in the day I could never understand why so many young people liked to backpack around to India to seek “enlightenment”. Maybe because I wasn’t into “spiritualism”, I suppose. Besides, I’d had enough poverty; no one wants to revisit that.

1) The Beatles went to India and made it a Place to Go. (Unlike legions of their followers, they took what they found there seriously — or at least Harrison did.)

2) The boomers grew up in unprecedented material comfort (and they could find work easily too). They never had to worry about being without food, clothing and shelter, even if they “turned their back on materialism,” so they learned the wrong lesson — sure, money won’t buy happiness, but you can’t ignore “things” if you don’t have that minimum.
