I’m going to attempt to deal with the “pact with the devil” rumor:

According to what I read, right before the slave revolt, there was a gathering of escaped slaves that involved a vodoo priestess. Her rituals and divinations were much of what convinced the slaves that the time for revolt was a hand. There was no “pact with the devil”, rather a blending of religions that lead Haiti’s enemies to start that rumor to lower the reputation of the newly freed slaves.

So they were in essence praying in their homogenized faith for help.
