Interesting that Prime Burger and the first McDonald’s restaurant opened within a year of each other as businesses of about the same size, offering the same product to roughly the same demographic—although Prime probably saw more foot-traffic in Manhattan than McDonald’s had in San Bernadino.

Prime Burger concentrated on quality, tradition, and personalized service. Today, their single restaurant is a beloved nostalgia joint that’s essentially unchanged from decades ago.

McDonald’s concentrated on turning the burger into a commodity, getting it out the door as fast as possible, and franchising that experience to other communities. Today, they have over 33,000 locations in 119 countries, with $24 billion in annual revenues.
