He’s too stupid to quit, and his supporters are too embarrassed to admit he’s that stupid.

Sadly, Akin apparently tends to out-perform his polls in actual elections. The explanation I heard is that his supporters are really dedicated and will walk over broken glass barefoot to vote for him. People who don’t like him aren’t that committed so bad weather, or whatever might deter them from voting.
