Charles, the word nuclear was actually pronounced nuc-u-lar during the inception of the US nuclear program. There were two camps and eventually, nu-cle-ar won out. But it was really just preference. It is likely he grew up (in Texas I can almost guarantee it) hearing it said that way. Did he understand its meaning and use it properly? Then why the constant harping on it? My mom still says she warshes her clothes in the zinc after all.

There is simply no way under the rules of English pronunciation that “noo-kyew-luhr” could ever be correct. Or do you think “noo-kyew-luss” is also a valid option for “nucleus”?
