I think the concept of fiction or movies is lost on them. There are antagonists and protagonists. Sometimes the protagonists or hero of a movie is what would be commonly seen as a villain in the real world. It’s purely for escapism or entertainment. Think about Goodfellas or maybe even The Sopranos. In the real world we would detest such people yet through drama, acting, and writing, we found ourselves intrigued and admirers of people that were mafioso killers.

I think Dexter is an amazing example of that. It’s fairly creepy when you realize you are actively rooting for the cops not to uncover the serial killer’s track.
