In this arena comes money, because the locked up bodies need to go somewhere and why not make money from it? This money is going to work on increasing itself and secondly on preventing reduction. So even when it’s so bad that nuance and forgiveness and reality checks begin to surface they’re massively handicapped.

Nationalizing prisons wouldn’t solve things, and they wouldn’t even help things quickly. But doing it would remove a major obstacle to the solution.

The public prisons make a ton of money for private interests, too. Private prisons are not a major obstacle to prison reform. If private prisons were paid, for example, based on recidivism rates and not incarceration rates, they could even be a large part of the solution.
