The analogy sort of breaks down when one remembers that the scores in sports are evident to everyone as the game goes on, rather than all the points tallied at the very end. Even the teams most committed to fighting as though they’re the underdog eventually have to acknowledge that they’re kicking the other team’s ass black and blue. Otherwise you start crushing morale, telling the players that no matter how good they’re playing, they’re still not doing enough to beat the other side.
