Amazingly, Ferdinand’s assassin, one Gavrilo Princip, survived nearly to the end of the First World War and died in prison of natural causes. Under Habsburg law he was exempt from the death penalty because of his age. He was 20 at the time of the assassination, just 27 days short of the limit of 21.
