re: #211 makeitstop

I’m looking at the flood zone map for Long Island, and I’m somewhat relieved to say it would take a Category 4 hurricane for a storm surge or flooding to get anywhere near my house.

Now here’s hoping the trees hold up.

I’ve been looking at the local maps, as well as keeping up to date with the local news. This area’s predicted to get roughly 6”-10” of rainfall before the storm’s gone, which is roughly what we got with the Nor’Easter last year. And while there was some localized flooding towards the small rivers nearby, this area stayed dry. The worst we’ll have to worry about is not being able to get very far for at least the first 6-8 hours after the storm finally passes.

Really, our biggest concern right now is the wind, and we’re praying that the dry air that’s supposed to be mixing into Irene will weaken the winds or possibly push her a little far back out to sea. At this point, we’re counting more on small favors than anything else.
