I suspect an awful lot of the crazy we’re seeing will vanish instantly and forever - following a single, very unpleasant event like a shooting or some other public violence. I agree that the majority of these kooks are just that - kooks, basking in the sudden attention they’re receiving. But it only takes one who takes things just a little bit too seriously to cause real problems.

Tim McVeigh leaps to mind. In the aftermath of his actions, the militia movement all but evaporated for years. But it was a hell of a way to get rid of it.
