re: #203 DaddyG

Wow. Please do not think I confuse the IRA and the Catholic Protestant split in Europe or pre-20th century Christianity with the modern religious right.

Christianity in some of its many political and religious guises has commited some inexcusable atrocities. Some branches of Islam are currently doing the same. My whole point was that the modern American religious right political movement (while not the poster children for tolerence and freedom) are not commiting the same kind of atrocities that the Taliban are and therefore the magical balance fairy is off target when comparing the two. Similarities yes. Equivelence no.

I know, and sorry if I seemed to imply that you were. ralphieboy made a good point that I think helps futher define my thoughts and I’ll throw out a hypothesis:

The current Religious Right in America will become more like Islam in their methodology and violence as their desire to merge governance and religion together fuses their belief that they are the only right religion with the belief that it is their right and duty to impose those beliefs on others.

There isn’t an equivalence right now, but I’ll put forth that there will be as the religious right continues down their path to extremism.
