Just thinking aloud, if the separatists did this, and they weren’t being actively assisted by Russian units, then, well, we’d all have to believe that a 777 flying at 30,000’ was brought down by a smuggled MANPAD. I’m….skeptical.

And if it does turn out that a Russian SA-11 shot down the plane, well, what happens then?

Most likely scenario is that the separatists actually had an SA-11. Where they procured it from is an exceedingly good question.

If - and that’s a big if and a nightmarish possibility - the Russians themselves actually shot the plane down while doing air cover duties for the pro-Russian separatists, well…….shit. That’s gonna be bad.
