I think it’s that and when you live in a place that your ancestors more or less have lived in for generations, you are threatened when you may lose it. Not excusing IRA or Unionist violence by any means but I think that’s a factor too. I also think the Troubles is much more complicated than Catholic v. Protestant.
It’s always been Irish v English. It’s just a quirk of history (Henry VIII) that makes the Irish mostly Catholic and the English mostly Protestant; none of the dispute is actually about religion.
