You do have to remember this. Nixon was already re-elected when Watergate happened. I wonder if that fact changed why the Dems of the 1970’s pushed for Nixon to be removed. Personally, I can see it from both sides here. But I think you need impeachment proceedings so future executives don’t do this. Now that said, they may be thinking and I’m inclined to agree that impeachment along with post-presidency criminal proceedings might be a bridge too far. And I agree with GFJ that Trump losing in the biggest re-election loss in years would be a huge blow to his ego.

On the issue of impeachment (the bill of charges and the vote in the House), hearings into whether there are any impeachable charges have to be held first.

Those hearings are being held right now, in very capable committees (witness Devin Nunes yesterday being held to the rules and sputtering uselessly).

If those committees find evidence of the sort of action which can support impeachment, Nancy Pelosi can immediately switch to moving the bill to the floor.

Just because it appears she isn’t considering impeachment doesn’t mean she isn’t. Since you only get one shot at the king, you’d better not miss.

Right up until a couple weeks before Nixon’s impeachment charges were ready to be brought to the House floor he had wide support. It was the hearings in committees which undermined that support, not the proposed charges themselves.
