I think it’s beautiful and dare I say it quite American that we live in a country where an imam can be openly gay and perform weddings for gay Muslims. I know it’s not uniquely American but it is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a westerner.

It may take time, but I figure in time, a distinctly American form of Islam will come to the fore. Culturally liberal, committed to democratic principles and the American way of life.
