re: #208 thedopefishlives

This is where family history kicks in. Indiana was nominally Northern, but the southern part of the state (near Kentucky) had some southern sympathizers and was fairly divided. I’ve also learned that one of my relatives left Kentucky for Indiana just prior to the Civil War. My suspicion - and it is only suspicion based on vague speculation and what little research I could gather - is that he left his slaveholder family and ran with an abolitionist family friend, married a Hoosier bride, and settled down in fish country.

Mine is pretty simple. My Dad’s family all emigrated from Germany and Ireland to Pennsylvania ranging from the 1790’s through the outbreak of the war. A lot of my German relations are Hessians though so maybe I have a way back uncle that served in the Revolution and stayed here after that. I honestly don’t know. Mom’s family has only been here since the early 20th.
