That said, Bill Clinton (or someone like him) was necessary to eventually get someone like Obama. It’s sort of the converse of conservatives needing someone like Nixon (who really wasn’t that conservative, at least for his time) in order to get to someone like Reagan.

Good analogy. I see Clinton and Nixon as interesting since Clinton is a lot more conservative than he sells himself as or how he’s perceived and Nixon likewise liberal though from what I read Nixon wasn’t interested in domestic policies at all and just finding a reasonable middle ground.
