Didn’t that result in some kind of massive Superfund cleanup site somewhere? It was some kind of tainted chemical that was mistakenly sold to someone who did that job, if I recall.

It wasn’t spreading oil per se which caused the EPA to buy out the town and move everyone out.

A chemical company in Missouri manufactured products of which one of the byproducts was dioxin. As the company continued to store dioxin on their site, they looked for a company which could dispose of it (at the time, incineration was the best method).

They hired a chemical company which actually knew very little about waste disposal, so that company subcontracted the job out to a guy who owned a local waste disposal company.

He primarily dealt in waste motor oil, so he mixed the dioxin into the waste motor oil.

The town subsequently hired him to spray the town streets, and others hired him to spray for weed suppression.
