I’d honestly make the point that the ‘Southern Strategy’ really was no more than the migration of of various types of Social Conservatives in the former Confederate States from the Democrats to the Republicans. Those seeking to criticize Nixon for encouraging such a move must ask what else Nixon could have done; Without those additional voters the GOP would have been in long-term minority status. Moreover, those Southern SoCons were not going to simply go away; If they had not stayed within the two party system
they might well have formed a third, regional party and then deadlock might have seting even stronger.

hmmm i wonder what respectable philosophical position it was that was so compelling to ‘southern conservative democrats’ that it caused them to switch party affiliation en masse by the tens of millions between 1964 and 1980… thinking…
