Well, there’s also the whole “metrosexual” meme. Conservative males feel threatened by gay men and by straight men who act according to the gay stereotype (fastidious about their appearance, lots of female friends without being a misogynistic asshat toward any of them, etc.) Anything different than what they perceive as “manly”.

But how can men like that be “the barbarians at the gate”? They have their hair combed!
