I’m OK with this idea in principal, but not really in practice. A sensor used to detect PETA’s drone could be used by the Zetas to detect drones used by the Border Patrol.

Detecting drones via acoustic handheld device just isn’t something to worry about. You might be able to pick up on a quad / octo-copter hovering at treetop height within a few hundred yards, those things are pretty noise and low flying. But there’s just no chance in hell of identifying a loitering Predator which has a service ceiling of 25K ft. I’d think based on the amount of background noise and attenuation you’d need a massively distributed array of microphones with greater geospatial accuracy than you can get with commercial GPS, powerful dedicated hardware processing ability, software based filters and phased beamforming.

Of course if you have all that then you can actually track the drone in 3D. Doable by the military and I’m certain it is being done by them, but way outside the capability of any asshole ostensibly selling portable detectors on the civilian market.
