The law takes intent into account, though. When there is a clear intent to defame, the law takes that into account.

Defamation cases are hard to win in the US because of the protections of ignorance— not knowing what you are publishing is a lie or distortion— and opinion— you’re simply offering opinion and analysis, not stating fact.

Altering a record clearly is in a different class, and I think a court would find so.

Intent only matters once you have cleared the initial hurdle of demonstrating a false and defamatory statement. Like I said, that is the part I think is hard here.
