Really, no. The insanity defense would work if the Holy Spirit was telling him that by clubbing the kids in the head he wasn’t actually hurting them, that this was an illusion. The insanity defense does not work when you know an action is wrong but you feel that it is justifiable because of a larger belief, even if that belief is, itself, nutty. The only questions for an insanity defense, in its current state, are A) Do you understand the difference between right and wrong and B) Were you so insane as to be under a compulsion and not your own will?
