Let me just point out something that has not been at all obvious from the reportage: the metadata the government was gathering was for Verizon Business Network, which is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than Verizon Wireless. The reason I am having to point this out is because I have now read at least a dozen different breathless write-ups about this, and I have not seen a SINGLE REPORTER who has bothered to read the warrant ONLINE, and who figured out that Verizon Business Network is run by a guy who is completely different than the guy who runs Verizon Wireless. In fact, I’m going to make a wild guess here and assume that the two entities are stovepiped in some way so that the international portion of Verizon can avoid having to pay any U.S. taxes.

But realistically, this has to be in place for all the telcos, or it would be meaningless. There is no reason at all to assume that the Verizon Business Network court order is the only one.
