Really, at this point the idea of putting guns in schools seems to fall into two categories: voluntarily and involuntary.

The first assumes that if you do away with “gun-free zone” laws and make it optional for teachers to pack guns, they’ll jump at the opportunity in the name of protecting their students. But really, I’ve talked with a couple teachers I know and they not only say they wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying a gun around their students, there’s not many of their fellow teachers they’d feel comfortable knowing were armed. I get the feeling such policies would just see a lot of teachers decline to carry, with those who do carry not being the most reliable in an armed gunman scenario.

The second assumes that teachers, who already are the subject of public ridicule and hatred, will gladly take on the added responsibility of carrying a loaded gun with them for the opportunity to teach. Personally, I think the more likely scenario in that case is teacher’s unions will tell the school system to go suck an egg and refuse to comply. And that, again, those who agree to the requirement are probably not the folks I’d want to rely upon to protect my children from people like Adam Lanza.
