Two Femen protesters were arrested in Crimea’s capital Simferopol on Thursday after staging a topless demonstration against Russia’s intervention in Ukraine in front of the regional parliament.

One protestor was stopped by police within seconds while another ran around, repeatedly shouting “Stop Putin’s War”, which she had also written across her chest.

She was eventually detained and taken away in a van by security forces, while some people who had been watching the protest shouted: “Prostitutes!”

Honestly, I think those Femen ladies are playing with some serious fire this time. It’s not just being detained, its that a woman seen as hostile, sexual and aggressive in front of a bunch of soldiers runs a too-high risk of being sexually assaulted as a means to “teach her to keep her place”. In reality, of course, what this would really be about would be power: “We brook no defiance from a whore such as you! We’ll take from you what we want to take!”

Note: that does not mean said women to do not have a natural right to protest. They do, but in my opinion the attendant risks are far too high.
