I don’t recall people showing up with loaded firearms at presidential events during the Bush years.

It takes one person with a gun, and we have a history of presidential assassinations. Some people are really, really worked up about Obama, and they tend to be the sort who are also well armed. Most of the folks who really hated Bush probably never held a firearm in their lives.

Plus it remains a fact that there’s been an explosion in recruitment for militia groups and white supremacist groups— which is directly tied to Obama’s campaign and election. The SPLC has documented this extensively. Moreover, Obama received Secret Service protection earlier than any other candidate, in May of 2007, because of the number of threats already coming in.
