It would be a different tack if he avoids the urge to run wingnut and works at winning moderates away from Hillary and plays the assumption that enough nuts will hold their noses and vote for him instead of Hillary.

In essence play the nuts the way the nuts claim the Democrats play the minorities.

I don’t see that happening. The primaries are where the base runs wild and, as we saw in 2012, the base is very much the ones in control. Romney won by virtue of being the last guy standing. There was no real challenger for the role of “moderate” and the rest of the field split the base vote something fierce. This year, the base vote really only has two people to pick from: Cruz or Paul. Meanwhile, the “moderate” vote is split all to hell.
