After shooting Tamir Rice, the officers at the scene then detained one of Rice’s siblings who had been in the vicinity, and then threatened to arrest Rice’s mom unless she calmed down.

The cops had given Rice less than 2 seconds to comply with any kind of instruction before they started shooting. And it was probably less than that. They gave him no chance to comply because when you look at the video of the shooting, the car drives up and is practically upon Rice when they get out and immediately begin shooting. There’s no excuse for any of this.

None.

Yet we know that the odds of indictment are low, and getting all the way to a conviction in an officer-involved shooting is slim to none. This was a wholly avoidable shooting and death. There’s no other way around that inescapable fact, except that they’ll be right wingers who are going to claim that he brought on himself (for having a gun, even though OH is an open carry state and whites can march through stores and streets with impunity with rifles like those used in any number of mass shootings, but a black kid gets killed for just playing).
