Watching the film, I do keep wondering why Elrond didn’t simply push Isildur over the brink and save everyone thousands of years of inconvenience.

Elves can be strangely apathetic at times. They had to write in their arrival at Helm’s Deep in the movie just to make it a little more interesting. That never happens in the books.
