…Like it or not, the “slavery wasn’t that bad” argument is unfortunately pretty common among more than a few people in the South* (and elsewhere). There are a lot of these people, and if I were a Republican, I’d want to see them shamed and ridiculed out of the party.

The really fucked up thing here, is that if Terry knew anything about Frederick Douglass, maybe he’d realize how insane it is to consider that Douglass owed gratitude to his master. When Douglass was around 16, his master sent him to Edward Covey, a slave-breaker. Covey’s job was basically to beat the living shit out of him until he was docile. Not exactly something you should thank somebody for.
