You know, I’m not going to lie, I never actually thought about it this way. I’ve always had the understanding of “popcorn theology”, don’t get me wrong, but it never occurred to me that the cherry-picking was being done in support of a specifically determined theological outcome. I mean, it makes sense; that’s literally how they approach everything else. I just never thought about it in those terms.

Don’t like SNAP or subsidized school lunches?

Ignore the loaves and fishes and go right to “He who does not work, does not eat” while ignoring the context of the latter verse.

Anti-abortion?

Ignore all the OT passages in which it is allowed (or even mandatory) and go right to “For I loved you when you were still in the womb” as proof that abortion is babycide.

And don’t forget all the favorite verses used by Southern slaveowners to justify their “Biblical institution”.
