The United Church of Christ (UCC) of which Obama’s Trinity United was a part, is “mainstream”, although it’s the most leftist of the American Protestant denominations. In particular, the national leadership of the church support gay marriage and “social justice” initiatives which involve “spreading around the wealth”.

That said, because the church’s form of governance is congregational, the national leadership is very weak politically within the church. Individual congregations set church policy. Many such congregations are quite conservative. On the other hand, many are as leftist as the leadership.
